A Blank Canvas is an Adventure

Painting is a uniquely remarkable form of magic. A blank white canvas can be transformed into a vibrant Saharan sunset, becoming a portal to the other side of the world. Paintbrushes are magic wands, transforming an untouched surface into a snapshot of adventure. A full safari can be built from paint, a surface on which to create, and a few simple tools. I pull some of my greatest inspiration from my global travels, and love to recreate the naturally vivid and stunning scenes from my trips in my studio. Traversing the globe has opened my eyes to the stunning sights and visuals across the world, and I try to share these through my art.

I love to adventure. Every facet of this planet is full of beauty, color, and life. I have had the great fortune of exploring countries whose sights have left me breathless. The Galapagos provided an unfathomably diverse array of colorful birds, plants, marine life, and scenic beauty. I saw more colors existing in nature during that exploration than I could ever have imagined before. Umbria, Italy brought bushy Great White Pyrenees dogs with heartfelt, human eyes and pristine, soft, clean fur. Africa brought vivid pink and orange sunsets with suspended Saharan dust and countless animals.

My 2016 adventure in Botswana, a country in Southern Africa bordering Zimbabwe, provided inspiration for one of my most recent paintings: “Lilac Beauty.” Every time I look at my finished painting, this memory comes flooding back to me, as if I were still there.

I was reclining in the canvas platform tent that was a temporary home on the safari when a massive elephant began to weave through the green vegetation. He grew closer until his face fully filled the space of the screened window; he was a gentle but curious giant, merely looking in on the humans. On a tree branch just past the elephant, a Lilac Breasted Roller peered in equally curiously, watching this strange scene unfold. This was my first sighting of this stunning bird. His colors, vibrant and vivid enough to have been finger painted by any color-happy kindergartener, were truly incredible. The pinks, purples, oranges, greens, and blues tore my eyes from the elephant in front of me, and focused my full attention on this small but captivating creature. This magnificent little animal was as fascinating as a massive elephant knocking small trees aside and approaching the tent!

This sight stuck with me, and informed this painting. There are subjects to paint everywhere, big and small, and it is thrilling to find them. Inspiration is everywhere!
