Unlock Your Artistry Power with the Commitment Key

Artistry is a marathon, not a sprint. Anyone can walk up to the starting line of a marathon, but it takes devotion, rigor, and commitment to ultimately cross the finish line. Anyone can set the best of intentions to practice their painting more often, but it takes legitimate commitment to establish a worthwhile practice that amounts towards an artistically fulfilling. Some of you may know my story…I made a commitment to follow my heart, pursue my dream, and dedicate hard work and rigor to my artistic journey. For me, this has meant setting aside time on the busiest of days to spend time in my studio. Whether it has been consistently working on painting exercises, signing up and sticking with online or in-person courses, completing one painting a day for a full month, or revisiting a difficult subject or technique to improve my skills, I make sure that I’m constantly taking action towards my goals.

The easiest trap in the world that you can fall into is thinking about your goals and dreams without committing to a plan or practice. Everyone can relate to the “New Years Resolution” syndrome to some extent; you choose something you’d like to improve upon, you start off with the best of intentions to complete your goal, and you lose your commitment sometime mid-January. Commitment is the key.

Below are a few inspirational quotes on commitment, and my reflections on why and how these statements are so important.

“Unless commitment is made, there are only promises and hopes… but no plans.” Peter Drucker

A dream is just that - a fleeting hope and thought - until you take action. The impetus for action is commitment. If you want to become a better artist or painter, concrete, tangible plans must be set. These can include signing up for a workshop, committing to daily painting exercises, or whatever will motivate you to consistently practice.

“You always have two choices: your commitment versus your fear.” - Sammy Davis, Jr.

Commitment can be scary! All too often, we allow our fear to get in the way of our artistry. Don’t hold yourself back.

“Desire is the key to motivation, but it’s the determination and commitment to unrelenting pursuit of your goal - a commitment to excellence - that will enable you to attain the success you seek.” - Mario Andretti

I truly believe that when you set your mind to something, anything is possible. I set my mind on making painting a career. Through my commitment, this has been possible! It took this determination and unrelenting pursuit of my goal to do so. Allow yourself the opportunity to strive for success!

“There’s no abiding success without commitment.” - Tony Robbins

This quote is self-explanatory. Dedication is crucial. Don’t quit before the miracle, commit and watch the magic happen!
