Authenticity

The paintings we remember most have one thing in common—they feel authentic. Have you ever wondered what gives them that feeling?

One of the questions I'm asked most often is, "How did you develop your style?" The answer usually surprises people. It wasn't a single breakthrough or defining moment. It happened gradually through years of painting, experimenting, making mistakes, and learning to trust what felt genuine rather than following what was popular.

As artists, it's easy to become distracted by trends, social media, or comparing our work to others. Inspiration is everywhere, and that's a wonderful thing. But I've learned that the most meaningful paintings don't come from trying to paint like someone else. They come from allowing our own experiences, curiosity, and personality to guide the process.

One of the most important commitments I've made to myself is to remain a lifelong student. I believe it's essential to try new tools and techniques, take courses and workshops, and continually explore different ways of creating. Every new experience teaches me something valuable.

The key, however, is that I don't try to become another artist. Instead, I take what resonates with me and thoughtfully incorporate those ideas into my own style of painting. Whether I'm experimenting with a new texture medium, discovering an unexpected color harmony, or learning a different approach to composition, I adapt those lessons so they remain true to my artistic voice.

I've also learned not to judge a painting too early. Some of my favorite pieces looked awkward halfway through. Layer by layer, they slowly revealed themselves. That process has taught me patience and the importance of trusting the journey.

I hope knowing a little more about my process helps you see each painting in a different light. Every layer, every brushstroke, and every decision represents hours of exploration and thoughtful refinement. What you see on the finished canvas is the result of curiosity, persistence, and trust.
