Making A Color Connection: Why the Colors We Choose Speak to the Heart
Color is the most immediate way we connect—with a painting, a space, a feeling.
Before we understand a composition, before we absorb its texture or shape, we feel its colors. As both an artist and a lover of beauty in all its forms, I believe color is more than aesthetic—it’s a form of communication, one that speaks directly to the heart.
For artists, designers, and collectors alike, color is rarely accidental. It’s often chosen with intention, even if it begins intuitively. Color sets the emotional tone. It carries the energy of a space. It shapes how we remember a piece, and how we live with it.
As an abstract artist, my relationship with color is deeply personal—and also ever evolving. The colors I reach for in the studio reflect not only what I see in nature, but what I feel internally. Sometimes, they surface without warning. Other times, they’re a response to a memory, a place, or a season of life.
Here’s how I connect to a few colors I return to often:
• Blues and blue-grays feel like breath, spaciousness, and calm. They remind me of sky, sea, and moments of stillness.
• Greens and soft earthy hues are grounding. They remind me of hiking along nature trails, full of mystery and renewal.
• Golds and ochres are sacred in my practice—symbols of light, warmth, and honoring the past. These shades often appear in paintings where I feel deeply connected to memory and spirit.
• Corals, magentas, and pinks express joy, vibrancy, and movement. They’re celebratory. They bring energy to both composition and space.
For designers curating spaces, and for collectors selecting art for their homes, these color connections matter. A painting’s palette doesn’t just blend into the decor—it adds emotional resonance to the room. It becomes part of the environment’s rhythm and tone.
For artists, understanding your color connection deepens your work. It adds honesty and emotional depth to your creative voice. And for art lovers, becoming more aware of how color makes you feel can help you choose pieces that truly belong with you—ones that make you feel seen, inspired, and at ease in your space.
As we step into May, I encourage you—whether you’re painting, designing, or simply curating your surroundings—to tune into the colors you’re drawn to. What are they saying to you? How do they make you feel? What memories or emotions do they evoke?
When we honor our color connections, we create with more presence—and we live with more intention.
Because color always speaks.
We just have to be willing to listen.
