Returning Home to Creativity

After several weeks traveling through Morocco, and nearly 30 hours returning home, I found myself carrying back far more than photographs and memories.

I returned inspired, emotionally full, physically exhausted… and quieter inside.

When I finally walked back into my studio, I expected to immediately begin painting again. Instead, I found myself slowing down.

Sitting quietly.

Reflecting.

Allowing everything I had experienced to settle before rushing into creating or planning what comes next.

And honestly, I think many of us forget how important that space is.

Morocco itself felt like a layered painting, lush green mountains giving way to the golden Sahara Desert, vibrant textiles glowing against ancient dark walls, narrow cobblestone pathways, sweet and savory flavors woven together in unexpected harmony.

Everywhere I looked, there was contrast, texture, movement, and history layered upon itself.

As an artist, it reminded me so much of the painting process.

My work is built through layers, transparent veils of color, bold marks, quiet spaces, texture, emotion, and moments that slowly reveal themselves over time. Meaningful experiences work much the same way.

Not every experience immediately becomes art.

Sometimes ideas need space to breathe.

To soften.

To quietly percolate beneath the surface before naturally emerging into something meaningful.

That realization has stayed with me since returning home.

Before rushing back into a full exhibition schedule or immediately filling every moment with productivity, I’ve been allowing myself time to pause and reconnect,  not only with my creative process, but with people and community.

Art is ultimately about human connection and reflection.

A connection to memory, emotion, beauty, and one another.

Whether through painting, conversation, travel, or simply sharing experiences, creativity has the ability to slow us down long enough to truly see and feel the world around us.

And perhaps that pause — that breathing space — is where the most meaningful ideas begin.
Before returning to the pattern of constantly going, planning, and producing, perhaps we should all first allow ourselves the gift of stillness where reflection, connection, and new ideas quietly begin.

Be still, take a breath…

Thank you for being part of this creative journey with me.
