What Colors are You Feeling for 2023?

When we look forward to a new year, we think about refreshing our homes, our walls, and our art. So naturally, we consider what colors are calling to us. It’s no wonder that this is the time of year when paint companies and Pantone announce their color of the year and the color trends for the upcoming year.

It’s a good time to ask yourself, “How do I want my surroundings to make me feel?” Color has a dramatic impact on our moods. It can draw us together and create an experience.

Here are some ways to consider the emotional impact of color as well as color trends when thinking about buying new art and new paint colors.

Color Impacts Us Viscerally

There is ample evidence that color has a dramatic impact on our moods. So why not harness this to help create the moods you want? Whether it’s a calm mood for your bedroom or a high energy feel for your home office, your color selection can really pay off.

Here are a couple of examples of how color impacts mood:

Blue

Blue gives us a calm, stable feeling. No wonder it’s a favorite color for so many people!

Black

Black feels classy, sophisticated, and dramatic. This is a bold choice for home decorating that gives some people an empowered feeling.

Orange

Orange is a stimulating color, like the visual equivalent for a cup of coffee. Don’t think this means you need to paint an entire room orange! But a pop or two of orange (in an artwork or a throw pillow) can have an energizing effect.

Red

Red gives us a feeling of strength and passion. This color is perfect for bedrooms or workout rooms, or as a powerful accent in a sophisticated office.

Green

We are naturally drawn to green because it reminds us of nature. Green can make us feel healthy and rejuvenated. What a fresh color for a bathroom! And any green art can bring this sense of bringing the outdoors in.

What are Some Color Trends for 2023?

I always advise people to take color trends with a grain of salt, because buying artwork and painting a room is an investment that should last for many years. However, taking a look at what’s trending can inspire your choices and make you feel confident in your choices.

Paint companies are saying that vibrant orangey-reds as well as bold reds will be popular. For a more subtle look, beige-blush is a warm, pinkish hue that coordinates well with other colors. As for neutrals, warm neutrals are seen as trending as well as dark neutrals like brown ocher.

These colors can be used sparingly or in large areas, and they can play together well, too (imagine orangey-red with dark brown ocher… gorgeous!).

My most recent series, The Power of Positivity, happens to contain a number of these trending colors. I didn’t plan it that way, but I’m happy to notice this! Whether you buy my art or that of another artist, paint your walls, or buy new furniture, I hope that 2023 will be a colorful year for you!
